Ursula Burns was raised by a single mother in a hood known to harbor gangs.
Her mother ran a daycare centre out of her home, and also ironed shirts so that she could afford to pay Urrsula’s fees.
Ursula attended New York University and started as an intern at Xerox.
Now, she is the CEO and chairwoman of Xerox, a Fortune 500 company. (And the first African-American to lead one).
2. Do Won Chang
Do Won Chang is the owner and founder of forever 21.
He moved to American from Korea with his wife in 1981, and he worked as a Janitor, a gas station attendant and in a coffee shop at the same time to be able to support himself and his family.
Their first store was opened in 1984, and that store grew to become Forever 21. A multi-national family business of 480 store empire that generates around $3 billion in sales a year.
Do Won Chang told the LA Times, “Forever 21 gives hope to people who come here with almost nothing, and that is a reward that humbles me: The fact that immigrants coming to America, much like I did, can come into a Forever 21 and know that all of this was started by a simple Korean immigrant with a dream.”
3. Howard Schultz
Howard Schultz grew up Brooklyn he said he has always wanted to climb “over the fence” and go beyond the the life he was given by his truck-driving father.
He earned a football scholarship to the University of Northern Michigan because of his excellence in sport.
After graduating with a degree in communications, Schultz worked for Xerox before he found a coffee shop with 60 shops called Starbucks.
For his love for coffee, he left Xerox to become the company’s chief executive in 1987and Starbucks now has more than 21,000 stores in 65 countries.
Schultz has a net worth of $3.1 billion.
4. J.k Rowling
J.K Rowling, after her divorce in 1990, was living on the welfare of her dependent child, Jessica.
She said she completed her first “Harry Potter” book in cafes, as walking around with her daughter as a way to get her to sleep.
The “Harry Potter” franchise is a worldwide success, and Rowling has been on and off Forbes’ billionaire list.
So, it doesn’t matter where you are or what life throws at you, you are going to do great if you WANT to, and WORK to make it happen.
