Even though it seems like it’s fashionable to be team fitfam right now, we will all agree that it will always be fashionable to be health conscious.

One of the many things to do in your journey to living a healthy lifestyle, is to detox occasionally.

Although the body is said to have a way of detoxifying itself, we can agree that it sure needs our help with the way we consume unhealthy meals and because of our environment.

Detoxification (sometimes called body cleansing) is a type of alternative medicine treatment which aims to rid the body of unspecified ‘toxins’ – accumulated substances that proponents claim have undesirable short-term or long-term effects on individual health. Wikipedia

Some of the simple and highly effective home remedies for detoxification are:


Oil Pulling.

This seems to be my favorite and I currently do this thrice a week. I do not only like it for removing toxins from my body, but also because it helps and improves my oral health.

Oil pulling is simply using an essential oil as sesame oil, sunflower oil, olive oil, or coconut oil to fight issues like toothache, bad breath, gum diseases.

It also reduces the bacteria in the oral cavity.

This method is said to be used traditionally to fight headaches, constipation, candida infections, congestion, cold sores, joint pains, and other ailments.


a. Swish one tablespoon of any of the above mentioned oil in your mouth like a mouthwash for 20 minutes, until the oil becomes thinner and turns milky and foamy.

b. Spit it out in a trash can (not your sink as it can clog the drain).

c. Rinse your mouth with warm water or warm salt water.

c. Tooth brushing should be done immediately and rinse mouth again with warm water.

This should be done on an empty stomach and should also be done daily at least for 15 days up to a month to see encouraging results.

(Please do not gargle or swallow oil as it contains toxins and bacteria)


    2. Green Tea

This is my second go-to detox style. It is safe and it is highly effective.

Green tea is said to be the healthiest drink on earth, and although it can pose danger if over-drank (read my article on green tea here); it is still a very safe option.

You can either drink two to three cups of green tea daily or take green tea extract supplements (100 to 750 mg per day).

Green tea aids weight loss, improve metabolism, control hair loss, may protect against Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.


    3. Lemons

Lemons and especially lemon peels have antioxidant called d-limonene, which activates enzymes in the liver that help remove toxic compounds. For improved health, mix lemon juice and a little zest in a cup of warm water and drink on empty stomach every morning.


    4. Raw Juices

Juices are better digested by the body since the indigestible fibers of vegetables and fruits are removed and the nutrients are also more easily available to the body in comparison to whole vegetables and fruit.

You can replace a full meal with fresh juices, or simply consume five to six cups of juices daily for a juice fast.

Raw juices from fruit and vegetables such as apples, carrots, grapefruits, spinach, blueberries, oranges, cucumbers, beets and lettuce, are highly beneficial for nourishing the body, removing harmful toxins, rich in vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and many other biologically active compounds that stimulate the immune system, hormone metabolism, reduce blood pressure and even regulate detoxification enzymes of the body.

For better result, drink juices slowly rather than gulping them down fast.


5. Green Smoothies

This is the most common way of detoxifying the body, It provides energy and boost metabolism.

A green smoothie is mostly made with kale, green apple, ripe banana, fresh parsley leaves, cilantro and collard greens.

You can drink one cup of green smoothie daily and can also gradually increase the dosage to three to four cups a day for at least three weeks for best results.


Other detox methods include using apple cider vinegar, aloe vera gel and many more.

In conclusion, detoxifying your body doesn’t have to be expensive and doesn’t need you to consume unhealthy supplements or products.
Also, you do not need to go without food for days to detox your body.
